Chiefs rumors: Mike Kafka promoted to quarterbacks coach for Kansas City

JACKSONVILLE, FL - AUGUST 24: Mike Kafka

The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly promoted Mike Kafka to quarterbacks coach as offensive adjustments continue under Andy Reid.

Despite the fact that the Kansas City Chiefs offense was such a high point for the team in 2017 (and that it looks very promising next year with a potential quarterback switch to Patrick Mahomes in 2018), the team has undergone a tremendous amount of coaching changes on that side of the ball.

The latest reported change comes to us from Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star, who says that Mike Kafka will be promoted to quarterbacks coach.

Kafka has long been a favorite for Andy Reid, ever since the head coach decided to draft Kafka with the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2010 (fourth round). The Northwestern graduate enjoyed a six-year NFL career although his only professional experience came in a few games during the 2011 season. He retired and went to help coach at his alma mater in 2016 before Reid brought him to the pro level just last year. Now one year after bringing him in as an offensive quality assistant coach, he’s taking over as quarterbacks coach.

The good news is that Kafka has been in K.C. as long as Patrick Mahomes, so he’s a very familiar face in the quarterbacks room for what should be the Chiefs new starter. And the good news for Kafka is that he looks to be on the fast track up the coaching ranks if Reid is already placing such trust in him after a single season on the sidelines. Every one of Kafka’s predecessors seems to be donning other team’s colors as a head coach these days, which makes Kafka an automatic name to watch given another 3-4 years in the league.
