Brandon Shippen, wide receiver

Brandon Shippen came to Kansas City a couple weeks ago for a tryout and apparently Brett Veach liked what he saw from the former Temple Owl. Shippen workedout at Arrowhead with offensive lineman Stephen Evans and now came away with an official home for the NFL offseason.

Shippen has been in this position before with both the Los Angeles Rams and the Miami Dolphins, but he’s never made it all the way to the regular season. The 23-year-old wideout is only 5’11 and is a former defensive back who transitioned to offense while with Temple, meaning he’s likely more developmental than many teams would like. Given a reserve/futures deal, the Chiefs will have the luxury of seeing him up close for a few months before having to likely make a call one way or the other.

Potential fit: The Chiefs are likely thinking about special teams first and foremost here with Shippen’s abiity to play defensive back or wide receiver both. That means he has good hands and Dave Toub will likely want to see what Shippen can bring to the coverage units.
