The Kansas City Chiefs have lost offensive lineman Damien Mama to the New York Giants after leaving him on the team’s practice squad.

Every team runs the risk each week with the list of players they leave on the practice squad. The Kansas City Chiefs are the latest to feel the downside of that risk as they’ve lost promising offensive lineman Damien Mama to the New York Giants on Tuesday, who signed him to their active roster.

Mama had been sitting on the Chiefs practice squad for the majority of the regular season after signing with the team as a undrafted free agent. He was impressive in rookie minicamp and stayed the course during training camp as well and looked like a nice, under the radar pick-up for John Dorsey as a player to watch for the future. Unfortunately the Giants also knew a good thing when they saw it and took advantage of their current position.

The Giants, at this stage, are looking to the future, so it’s not a surprise to see them create active roster space to grab a couple of prospects sitting on the practice squads of teams who can’t afford to stash away such a player right now. For the Chiefs, the pressure felt to win each week will keep them from putting a player like Mama on the roster just for the sake of 2018. There’s still the matter of 2017 to take care of.

As much as the Chiefs might feel the sting of this loss, they’ve also enjoyed the fruits of being able to raid other team’s practice squads even in 2017. Shortly after losing Cairo Santos to another groin injury in Week 3, Brett Veach reached out to the Carolina Panthers to sign Harrison Butker away from their practice squad. Ever since, the Chiefs have basically enjoyed knowing their field goal attempts are as close to automatic as ever.
