The NFL announced two hefty fines for members of the Kansas City Chiefs secondary for instances against the New York Jets.
The National Football League decided to go ahead and fine two members of the Kansas City Chiefs‘ secondary for their play against the New York Jets in Week 13. Specifically, both cornerback Marcus Peters and safety Daniel Sorensen will find their paychecks just a bit lighter after being fined by the NFL for throwing a flag and roughing the passer, respectively.
Peters’ behavior has been discussed all week by Chiefs Kingdom. After Peters became frustrated by the officiating late in the team’s loss to the Jets last Sunday, the cornerback picked up an official’s flag and tossed it into the stands. He then left the field for the locker room under the (false) belief that he’d been ejected for his antics. He then returned to the sideline but was not in full uniform (missing socks) so he could not rejoin his teammates on the field.

Ultimately the Chiefs decided to suspend Peters for Week 14 against the Oakland Raiders, but the NFL is tacking on another $24,309 fine for the flag-throwing part. News came out on Saturday that the Chiefs’ decision to suspend Peters resulted more from internal conflict between Peters and an unnamed assistant coach after the game than anything on the field.
As for Sorensen, the versatile safety was fined more than $18K for hitting Josh McCown in the same game. He was already penalized during the game, but the NFL seriously frowns upon potential QB hits and injuries, so Sorensen will also pay the financial toll like Peters.
Peters will sit this weekend, but Sorensen will be an important member of the secondary this week as the Chiefs try to get their first win since late October and put some distance between them and the Oakland Raiders in the race for the AFC West.
