For the second time this season, Alex Smith has won the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week after tossing 4 touchdowns in a loss to the Jets.
Even with a recent slump, Alex Smith is having a heckuva season for the Kansas City Chiefs. His most recent standout moment came just last week when he threw four touchdowns and zero interceptions in the Chiefs loss to the New York Jets.
While the loss stung, Smith still earned credit for his performance by being named FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week for the second time in 2017.
Smith has completed 68 percent of his passes thrown this year with 23 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions on the season. His 3,239 passing yards are only 264 yards from a career high, a mark he could potentially set this weekend against the Oakland Raiders will three more games to go. In fact, it’s not unrealistic for Smith to reach 4,000 passing yards in 2017.
As for his other totals, they match the highest and lowest of his career. His 23 touchdowns matches his previous season high, which makes him a lock to set a personal best there as well. As for interceptions, if he fails to throw another, he’ll match his career low, although given the rate at which he’s thrown them in recent weeks, that will be a hard mark to keep at the current level.
In addition to his passing prowess in 2017, Smith has also rushed 48 times for 305 yards—the third highest total in his NFL career.
Smith’s four touchdown performance equalled his season-opening total as the best game of the year. That Week 1 performance featured the same 4 touchdown performance, except it was against the defending champion New England Patriots.
