Former Kansas City Chiefs kicker Cairo Santos looks good in a recent video posted of him hitting a field goal in practice.

Will they or won’t they? It’s the question we’ve asked since the Kansas City Chiefs first decided to release kicker Cairo Santos after already being placed on injured reserve with a groin injury that needed significant time to heal.

Santos is the most accurate kicker in Chiefs history, and he set a career high last year in field goal completion at over 88 percent. This preseason, Santos suffered a groin injury that caused the Chiefs to seek outside help for the bulk of training camp in Sam Ficken. However, Santos returned healthy and ready to go and through the first couple weeks of the season, he looked the part. Then, however, he was injured again.

After leaving in Week 3, general manager Brett Veach pulled a very interesting move, signing rookie kicker Harrison Butker away from the practice squad of the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers had hoped to stash him there after selecting him in the seventh round, but the Chiefs were enamored and he also drew high praise from special teams guru Dave Toub.

Since his arrival, Butker has been automatic for the Chiefs, although it’s a very small sample size. Since missing his very first kick as a rookie in the NFL. the Georgia Tech product has kept things steady with a perfect 10 of 10 approach. He’s also never missed an extra point since arriving in K.C.

Now the Chiefs have a real decision to make. Santos was let go by the team likely because they wanted to be able to use that other roster spot on IR for other players, given that there are literally so many injuries. Did the Chiefs have a plan to bring him back when he’s ready? If so, what does that mean for Butker?

Clearly from the video above, Santos is feeling better with each passing week and it’ s likely only a matter of time until he’s ready to kick again. Whether it will be with the Chiefs or not remains to be seen.
