For today’s Red Friday Report, Lucas Hampton breaks down the complete series history between the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins.

Happy Red Friday Addicts! In preparation for the Monday night game against the Washington Redskins, I turned to Football Database to look at the history the two teams share.  I also got the game stats from Pro Football Reference.

Game 1 – 10/24/1971

The first game on record between the Chiefs and Redskins. This game was played at the old Kansas City Municipal Stadium, the predecessor to Arrowhead. That’s quite a ways back! The Chiefs took the win that day 27-20. Led by Len Dawson at quarterback, who threw 10 completed passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns. Ed Podolak tore it up at running back that game with 24 carries for 110 yards on the ground. Opening up your history with a team with a nice win. That’s how it’s done.

Game 2 – 10/10/1976

Played at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C., the second game between these two teams ended in a 33-30 Chiefs victory. This win came courtesy of Jan Stenerud nailing four out of six field goal attempts. Helped along by a strong performance from quarterback Mike Livingston who completed 15 of 29 passes for 332 yards and two scores. Similarly to their first matchup nearly five years prior, the Chiefs notched another win.

Game 3 – 9/18/1983

Another battle fought at RFK Stadium. This game would end with a final score of 27-12 and the Chiefs being served their only recorded loss to the Redskins in franchise history. Despite the best efforts of the defense and kicker Nick Lowery, the Chiefs were shamed in this one. However, this will not happen again throughout the rest of the series to the present day.

Game 4 – 11/15/1992

More from Arrowhead Addict

This was a game played at Arrowhead Stadium. It ended with a final score of 35-16 and a resounding victory for the Marty Schottenheimer led Chiefs. QB Dave Krieg led the charge on the win with stats totalling 19 of 29 for 302 yards and two touchdowns. The defense held strong and kept the Redskins to minimal scoring. The Chiefs are cementing themselves as the better team against the Redskins by now.

Game 5 – 11/05/1995

Three years later, the Redskins would come back to Arrowhead Stadium to try again. Similarly to their last visit, the Redskins got served a heaping plate of humiliation. This game ended with a score of 24-3. QB Steve Bono was the key to this win. His stats that game finished at 21 of 37 for 201 yards and one touchdown. Can you see the trend?

Game 6 – 9/30/2001

The first game between these two teams at FedEx Field ended in an embarrassing 45-13 Chiefs themed smackdown. QB Trent Green and RB Priest Holmes were the two men to thank for this win. Green finished the game with 21 of 26 passes completed, 307 passing yards and 3 touchdowns. Holmes ran all over this Redskins defense in the running and passing game. Rushing stats, Holmes finished with 23 rushes for 147 yards and two scores. He also caught five passes for 78 yards and another touchdown.

Game 7 – 10/16/2005

The Redskins came to Arrowhead once again to walk out empty-handed like last time. A 28-21 win for the Chiefs that day. Green ended the game with a stat line of 15 of 25 for 181 yards and one touchdown. Green was the main contributor to the win in this game.

Game 8 – 10/18/2009

The eighth game between the Chiefs and Redskins took place in the inaugural season of general manager Scott Pioli and head coach Todd Haley. The Chiefs marched into FedEx Field and played a game of “Who sucks the least?” with the Redskins that day. The final score was a 14-6 Chiefs win. The defense was the only reason the Chiefs stood a chance. Getting several big stops and a safety on QB Jason Campbell, kicker Ryan Succop posted the only other points the Chiefs would earn that day. A victory when its all said and done, but this was an ugly one.

Game 9 – 12/08/2013

The most recent clash between these two teams happened in another inaugural season but this time, welcoming new GM John Dorsey and HC Andy Reid. The Chiefs returned to form, taking the field in the Redskins home turf and smashing them 45-10. Alex Smith and Jamaal Charles willed their team to victory, with Smith contributing 14 of 20 passes completed, 137 yards and two touchdowns. Charles showed off his talent by running the ball 19 times for 150 yards and a touchdown to boot.
