Melvin Gordon vs. Chiefs run defense

Going into the 3rd week of the season the Chargers have the 31st rushing offense in the NFL. Both the Buccaneers and Dolphins have more rushing yards despite playing just ONE game. The Chargers lead back Gordon has just 67 yards on 27 carries and 1 touchdown. However, Gordon has actually been most effective in the passing game recording 12 receptions for 90 yards and 1 touchdown.

Part of the reason for the deficiencies in the run game, and helps to explain the uptick in Gordon’s receiving game, is the fact that the Chargers offensive line is not very good. Currently the Chargers offensive line ranks last in run blocking by Football Outsiders. The Chargers offensive line will be going against the Chiefs defense line which ranks 21st in run stopping by Football Outsiders.

Playing now in his third season, Gordon has so far averaged just 3.7 yards per carry and 2.5 yards per carry just this season. Although the Chiefs run defense isn’t the best, it’s certainly good enough to slow down Melvin Gordon. I expect Gordon to have around 15 carries for 52 yards and 5 receptions for 45 yards.
