The Kansas City Chiefs will be without their starting center Mitch Morse for a few weeks due to a foot sprain, but the good news is that they avoided any real disaster with news that he would not require further surgery after having an MRI.

Morse had to exit the Philadelphia Eagles game on Sunday in Week 2 with a “foot sprain” as head coach Andy Reid described after the game. The worry was that Morse would have to miss considerable time if there were serious ligament or muscle damage. Fortunately the Chiefs seem well-suited to hold things down while Morse is out.

Zach Fulton will likely take over starting center duties while Morse is out, and he filled in admirably down the stretch in the team’s win over the Eagles on Sunday. Fulton has started several games at center before for the Chiefs and knows the schemes inside and out at this point. Fulton could likely start at center for a few teams, and this gives him a chance to show what he can do as a starter in a contract season now that his rookie deal is coming to a close.

For the Chiefs, this is an optimal time to lose Morse, if such a thing exists, because the schedule is a bit light before turning heavy around Week 6. The Chiefs face the winless Chargers on Sunday followed by the Washington Redskins and Houston Texans through Week 5. Each of those are winnable games before gauntlet comes wtih the Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys. Getting Morse back would be key for that stretch run.

Morse was the team’s second round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
