The Kansas City Chiefs announced a couple changes at running heading into the team’s upcoming game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

At this point, C.J. Spiller has to be wondering what will come next for him as a now free agent running back. Spiller is now free to sign with any team, including the Chiefs we suppose, after being released for the third time this year by Kansas City. In his place, the Chiefs have added running back Akeem Hunt from the practice squad to the active roster.

The Kansas City Chiefs first signed Spiller in the spring as a nice low-risk attempt to find a diamond in the rough, a reclamation project of sorts for a player who was, at one point, a dynamic versatile offensive weapon for the Buffalo Bills. Injuries took over, however, and Spiller has bounced from team to team since his days as a Pro Bowl running back.

Spiller looked like he had earned a roster spot with the Chiefs after lasting through offseason training activities as well as the entire preseason. The Chiefs lost Spencer Ware in the preseason for the entire year, and the Chiefs failed to make any other roster moves to replace him. At that point, Spiller seemed safe for the year.

Per Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star, the Chiefs made the move for special teams reasons. Akeem Hunt is the new addition, a former running back at Purdue who actually had returns of 99 and 100 yards in his collegiate career, giving the Chiefs another return option if they so choose. Hunt has played with the Houston Texans for his first two years in the league before joining the Chiefs practice squad in the last couple weeks.
