Eric Berry’s spot on the active roster has been taken over by Steven Terrell, a safety who was with the Chiefs this summer.

The Kansas City Chiefs have officially filled Eric Berry’s spot on the active roster after placing him on injured reserve with a ruptured Achilles tendon. Taking over in the defensive backfield for Berry will likely a committee of those who already played around him on the field, but Steven Terrell is the new signing who will likely serve as depth and a necessary piece on special teams coverage units.

Terrell joined the Chiefs after some time with the Seattle Seahawks organization back in early July and lasted through the entirety of the preseason and training camp. Terrell failed to make the active roster and he also was too vested as a player to be stashed on the team’s practice squad. His availability in free agency is a boon since he was already familiar with the Chiefs system and coaching staff.

General manager Brett Veach had a few options to replace Eric Berry, but Terrell actually makes the most sense. The Chiefs are ready to win now and going with an untested rookie or unfamiliar veteran like those on the team’s practice squad is certainly a solid Plan B option. But Terrell has earned nice marks in the past on special teams and he played well in the preseason per camp reports. Terrell alos has 32 games of pro experience and five starts in his Seahawks career. Leaving Leon McQuay on the practice squad lets him get his feet wet in practice without making major mistakes on the field when it counts.

If Terrell doesn’t play well for some reason, the Chiefs also have former Falcons defensive back Akeem King available. He will likely need time to meet the staff and learn the schemes, but he’s another long and lean veteran who could supplant Terrell down the road.
