The Kansas City Chiefs used some of their defensive line depth to replenish a late round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by dealing David King.

Most NFL teams lack the requisite players in the trenches on both sides of the line, but the Kansas City Chiefs have built up a startling amount of depth in both cases, for both the offensive and defensive fronts. On Friday night they were able to cash in one such asset in defensive lineman David King by dealing him to the Tennessee Titans for a seventh round draft choice.

King has carved out a longer than expected career as a former seventh round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft of the Philadelphia Eagles. He bounced to a couple teams over the years, including the Seattle Seahawks, and found a niche with the Chiefs on the practice squad and active roster over the last couple years. King was likely a roster cut for the Chiefs this year given the depth on the team and the Titans felt they could help fill a need.

The Chiefs could use the seventh round pick in return given that they’ve dealt a few future assets in recent weeks. They traded a future pick for linebacker Reggie Ragland in a deal with the Buffalo Bills, a fourth round choice in 2019. Then they also dealt a fifth round selection next year to the Cleveland Browns for offensive lineman Cameron Erving,. Next year’s seventh round choice was also dealt last year for cornerback Kenneth Acker just before the 2016 season by John Dorsey. Picking up an asset, even a conditional one, gives the Chiefs another pick or at least a piece to help move around the draft board on day three.
