The Kansas City Chiefs can breathe easy knowing that Spencer Ware could come back as soon as a couple weeks from his knee injury.
When Spencer Ware went down early in the loss to the Seattle Seahawks, everyone in Chiefs Kingdom hoped for the best while likely expecting the worst. After all, when a player is carted off due to a knee injury, it’s hard not to think of acronyms that end in “CL”. Fortunately for Ware and the Chiefs, it was initially termed a knee sprain and now Andy Reid and company have given the media an official timeline between two and eight weeks.
That means that Spencer Ware could return as soon as their September 17 game against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2 or as late as important divisional contests in mid-to-late October against the Oakland Raiders or Denver Broncos. Either way, it’s much better than staring at a long, grueling and difficult schedule without Ware at all.

The Chiefs made significant changes to the running back position this offseason, which means the only familiar face suiting up for fans in the backfield in Week 1 will be Charcandrick West. C.J. Spiller is a veteran reclamation project likely to now make the roster and able to spell likely starter Kareem Hunt at times. Hunt will likely be the team’s starting back from the outset. If Andy Reid wanted Hunt to get a bit better at pass blocking before giving him the responsibility, he’s got limited time to get him ready before the season.
Hunt might still need some time to adjust, but he’s showed off a punishing toughness in the preseason that should make Reid quite happy during the regular season. Hunt’s ability to catch the football gives another outlet to Alex Smith in the team’s West Coast offense, and yet he also has the ability to stretch a play unexpectedly for extra yardage. In a game of inches, a player like Hunt makes a serious difference.
Yet having Hunt play so early and so often is going to likely also result in some miscues. It’s good, then, that Ware is on the way back sooner than later. Here’s hoping the knee feels better soon and that the Chiefs can employ a full and competitive backfield.
