The Kansas City Chiefs got a nice boost from De’Anthony Thomas as the special teams units are keeping them in the game.

Last season the Kansas City Chiefs led the NFL with 8 returns for a touchdown in addition to their overall excellent special teams play. Wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas showed fans that despite the loss of Tyreek Hill as kick returner, the Chiefs will still be a threat to take it to the house every time they receive the ball on special teams. Check out Thomas’s 95-yard kickoff return below against the Seattle Seahawks.

Tyreek Hill was the team’s primary kick returner in 2016, especially as the year went on, but Hill’s incredible athletic prowess and top end speed has him focused primarily on playing wide receiver. The Chiefs wanted to keep him fresh, which means no kick returns, although Hill remains the team’s primary punt returner. Thomas is expected to be the team’s kick returner heading into the regular season.

Last year, De’Anthony Thomas returned 15 kickoffs for the Chiefs with an average of 22.5 yards/return. His longest return on the season was 41 yards and his career long in three seasons in the NFL in 78 yards. He has never returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the regular season.

If the Chiefs were to switch gears away from Thomas, some other possibilities could include new running back C.J. Spiller, wideout Chris Conley or even inserting Hill back as a kick returner if a catalyst is needed.
