Trevor Siemian has reportedly won the Denver Broncos starting quarterback job for a second consecutive season over Paxton Lynch.

The Denver Broncos haven’t made anything official and there are still two weeks of the preseason left to play, but rumors are swirling from multiple sources that Trevor Siemian is expected to remain the Broncos starting quarterback for another season, besting former first round pick Paxton Lynch for the job.

While many from the outside would scoff at this notion, that a middling performance by Siemian last year cannot be topped by a first round pick, Broncos players aren’t couching it in negative terms. Jeff Legwold of ESPN covers Denver and notes that players are positive about the Broncos choices at quarterback.

"Quietly, many of Siemian’s teammates have said in recent days that while they believe the team could win with either Siemian or Paxton Lynch at quarterback, they believe Siemian had won the quarterback competition by a growing margin each week."

Nicki Jhabvala goes even further and wonders if Lynch will even have another chance to win the Broncos’ quarterback job. If he can’t win in 2017 at some point, showing himself to be a stronger contender than Siemian—who has performed well enough as a former seventh round choice but has not shown the ability to move the chains like Broncos fans have seen in the past—then will there be another opportunity for Lynch?

That’s an important point because John Elway is a decisive leader and knows what good quarterback play resembles. You either have it or you don’t and patience among fans at Mile High will be wearing thin if the Broncos enter another season with a competing duo of Siemian and Lynch. Despite the first round investment, the team has a new head coach in Vance Joseph with no ties to Lynch and it might be easier to recoup some level of the investment in a trade and call a miss what it is.

Then again, Lynch came into the NFL as a project, a big one, in fact, as a 6’7, 244 lb. giant of a quarterback. The physical tools are all there, but it takes some players longer than others to put it together. It might be too early to call “bust” on Lynch just yet even if beating out Siemian for the job shouldn’t be a major obstacle.
