Former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Sean Smith has reportedly been arrested for felony assault stemming from a July 4 incident.

Sean Smith has experienced a steep fall from grace since just over a year ago when he was hitting free agent after a stellar run as a top cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs. Ever since he signed a 4-year, $40 million deal with the Oakland Raiders, he’s been benched for his play, outright demoted this preseason and now, worst of all, he’s been arrested and charged with felony assault on Thursday from charges stemming from a July 4 incident with his family.

TMZ Sports reports that Smith faces up to seven years in prison if convicted, but that’s getting ahead of things just a bit. Smith’s lawyer naturally refutes the charges and insists his client is innocent. TMZ reports:

"Officials say Smith attacked his sister’s boyfriend on July 4 — beat and stomped on his head in Pasadena in the early hours."

Smith’s play had already been frustrating enough for the Raiders that he’d been replaced this preseason as a starter by former seventh round pick T.J. Carrie. One season after signing Smith to be their top cornerback across from David Amerson, but instead they’ve had to reload with another first round investment in Gareon Conley.

During his three year career with the Chiefs, Smith intercepted five passes in 44 games and was a second-team All Pro for Pro Football Focus in 2014. Last year for the Raiders, Smith started 15 games and had two interceptions.

It’s yet unknown how the Raiders or even the NFL might handle Smith in the short-term, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Raiders attempt to cut ties with Smith or have the NFL punish or suspend him in some way.
