Practice was sloppy for most of the team portion on Monday at Kansas City Chiefs training camp in St. Joe.

On Monday, linebacker Derrick Johnson was nowhere to be found when practice resumed for the Kansas City Chiefs in Saint Joseph. After practice, head coach Andy Reid let everyone know that Johnson had been given the day off in a preplanned day of rest. This is the Chiefs staff caring for their players and veterans the best way possible. Tamba Hali has yet to practice and it was known before camp that he would not practice. The Chiefs are showing that they realize some of these players don’t need the wear and tear on their bodies—that they will be ready when the season kicks off in a couple of weeks.

Eric Berry and Ashton Lampkin also missed practice again. Berry was seen in the trainers tent during practice and then again stayed to sign autographs before he headed up the hill. Berry has a sore heel and if I had to guess will have the night off Saturday night in Cincinnati. Lampkin tried to practice but had to leave shortly after stretches and didn’t return with a knee injury.

The story of the day for the Chiefs was the sloppiness of the practice. The quarterbacks were missing throws and the rest of the team followed their lead. This isn’t to say that they were being lazy. It means that the team in general had an off day. These definitely happen and the key is to make sure that you iron out as much as possible so the days become fewer and fewer in between. The Chiefs return to practice today and tomorrow and then wrap up camp. They will have Thursday and Friday off before taking on the Bengals on Saturday night.
