Patrick Mahomes is earning all of the attention as the Chiefs prepare for their first preseason game against the 49ers at Arrowhead.

There are 89 other players suiting up for the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday night, but tell that to Chiefs Twitter, where it’s clear that one player in particular is going to earn the lion’s share of attention. Chiefs fans will have their moment when quarterback Patrick Mahomes takes the field to start the third quarter as the team hosts the San Francisco 49ers at Arrowhead Stadium on Friday.

The attention certainly makes sense given the level of excitement when the Chiefs first traded up in the 2017 NFL Draft back in April to secure the rights to Mahomes, a quarterback out of Texas Tech. The team traded their first round pick, No. 27 overall, an additional third round pick this year as well as their 2018 first round pick to move up 17 spots with the Buffalo Bills to take him. It was that moment that cemented fans’ attention at record levels.

The Chiefs haven’t taken a quarterback in the first round since Todd Blackledge back in 1983. An entire generation of fans have grown up without the Chiefs even making an attempt at drafting their own franchise quarterback. Throw in several years of pitiful quarterback play from the likes of Tyler Thigpen, Brady Quinn, Tyler Palko, Matt Cassel and more (along with the current arm limitations of Alex Smith) and it makes everyone hungry to see what a top young gunslinger can do.

In case you doubt the absolute fervor for Mahomes tonight and the impatience of fans to see him, just check out the wide range of posts on Chiefs Twitter for yourself.
