The Kansas City Chiefs have added a new defensive tackle to the mix with the signing of Maurice Swain.

It’s becoming clear that one of the primary areas Brett Veach wanted to address before the regular season began was defensive line. Not only did he recently sign Roy Miller and release Montori Hughes, but now he’s added another new face to the competition heading into the team’s first preseason game on Friday in Maurice Swain.

Swain joins a crowded defensive line on the depth chart that not only includes the newly signed Miller but also features Chris Jones, Rakeem Nunez-Roches, Jarvis Jenkins, Ricky Ali’ifua, Bennie Logan, Cam Thomas, Allen Bailey, Tanoh Kpassagnon and David King. That’s a lot of rotational bodies to consider in the upcoming preseason game. Fortunately the starters should sit most of the time, giving players like Swain to make their presence felt in the fourth quarter.

Swain, a 6’5, 314 lb. lineman, joins the Chiefs after signing with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent rookie this spring. Swain is a big body who recently graduated from Auburn and played sparingly there. Swain had 14 total tackles and 1.5 sacks for the Tigers his senior season.

Cliett has signed with the Chiefs earlier this summer hoping to stand out among the linebacker ranks, but he remained buried on the depth chart behind newer additions like Kevin Pierre-Louis.
