The Miami Dolphins are likely going to have Jay Cutler under center for the next year, and a look at his career numbers versus the Chiefs are disconcerting.

On the surface, it sounds like a move that doesn’t matter. If the Miami Dolphins roll with Matt Moore or a guy coming out of retirement to replace Ryan Tannehill normally shouldn’t matter too much to fans of opposing teams. However, with the news that Jay Cutler has inked a one-year agreement with the Dolphins to play in 2017 after all, fans of the Chiefs might want to take notice.

Cutler has a surprisingly strong record against Kansas City in his career. Although it’s a short sample size of five games spanning nearly a decade, Cutler certainly has played some of his best football when going against K.C. In his career, Cutler is 4-1 against the Chiefs, including a 2-1 record at Arrowhead, the only loss coming on the road in 2008 when he was quarterback for the Denver Broncos.

More from Arrowhead Addict

Cutler has completed 65% of his attempted passes against the Chiefs, including 10 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions. Most of those games came back in 2007 and 2008, which makes you feel a bit better about the results, except that he also beat the Chiefs with the Chicago Bears back in 2015 in a close 18-17 win that was also at Arrowhead. You might remember the game since the Chiefs were dominating, up 17-3 at halftime at home. Then the Bears came out in the third and fourth quarters and outscored the Chiefs 15-0. (Key penalties against Marcus Peters and Jaye Howard kept devastating 4th quarter drives alive for Chicago.)

Even taking a look at how Cutler has fared against Andy Reid’s teams in the past, before K.C., still yields a winning record for Cutler. In three games against Reid’s Philadelphia Eagles, Cutler went 2-1 with a win in his only game on the road in Philly in 2011. In those games, the Bears saw their starting quarterback throw 7 touchdowns against only 1 interception from 2009 to 2011. Again it’s a small sample size, but against the Chiefs and/or Reid, Cutler’s career numbers look sharp.

The Chiefs are a more talented team overall than the Dolphins, but the two playoff hopefuls will square off officially on Christmas Eve in the second to last regular season game for each—another home game for Kansas City. Here’s hoping the Chiefs have an easier time against Cutler than what they’ve had in the past
