New England Patriots are 9-point favorites over Chiefs
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs are currently 9-point underdogs to the New England Patriots per the latest betting lines out of Vegas.
According to the latest odds from Las Vegas, the New England Patriots are now up to 9-point favorites over the visiting Kansas City Chiefs for the NFL’s season opening game on Thursday, September 7.
The line continues to move toward the Patriots ever since the schedule was first announced. Opening betting lines for the game put the Chiefs as 7-point underdogs, but clearly offseason momentum has likely went against the Chiefs (or for the Patriots). It makes sense on paper, but the game will likely be a much closer one than what bettors are currently predicting.

The Patriots have the offseason momentum given the lack of drama around the team and the excitement about recent acquisitions, most notably former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Brandin Cooks. The game will be the debut for Cooks along with several other free agents or trade assets like Mike Gillislee, Rex Burkhead, Stephon Gilmore, Kony Ealy and more.
For the Chiefs, this offseason could be viewed as distracting, from Tamba Hali’s recent Twitter rant to letting general manager John Dorsey go to releasing Jamaal Charles and Jeremy Maclin and Jaye Howard. Despite the rumors to the contrary, the Chiefs still boast one of the NFL’s deepest rosters and have plenty of impact players on both sides of the ball. The first game should be a reminder to everyone of the players left in Kansas City.
The Patriots have good reason to be favored but nine points is a silly total. Expect Andy Reid to have his team ready to play the Patriots close in the primetime opener. It should be one of the toughest contests for both teams over the course of the entire season.
