The Kansas City Chiefs are officially finished with their training camp contract at Missouri Western, but the Chiefs say their intentions are to return.
This year, the Kansas City Chiefs will begin their season as they have every year since 2009 by heading to Missouri Western for training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri. The university has been a very nice place for fans in the area to see their favorite team and to provide the players with a home away from the noise and distraction of a familiar, larger city. Team president Mark Donovan was clear in a statement at the start of this year’s camp that he’s been very pleased with the long-term arrangement.
What is interesting, however, is that the contract between both sides will be finished once training camp closes in a few weeks. Donovan is saying the right things about remaining in St. Joe for now, and that could be the best scenario, but there are other things to consider.
"“Our intention is to come back. It has been a great experience for us,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said. “We had a couple of things we wanted to change a couple years ago and the university over-delivered on that.”"

Another option for the Chiefs could take them across the state to St. Louis. Ever since the Rams officially moved to Los Angeles, the Chiefs have expressed an interest in becoming a serious player in that market. They’ve been very respectful not to come right in and blitz with ad campaigns and the like, but as time moves on, such as another year since the Rams departure, it could be perfect timing to take training camp to the other side of the state.
What better way for fans in St. Louis to get to know the Chiefs than with a long string of accessible dates where kids can get autographs and families can make memories. It could also be the year that Patrick Mahomes takes over, which could be a perfect time for a new set of fans to climb on board with a new face of the franchise. Just as the Rams wanted a new face as they entered L.A., the Chiefs could promote their team in the same way.
St. Joe is certainly an ideal location for a number of reasons and there’s no need to mess with a good thing, but the Chiefs could use a marketing boost, as we’ve already discussed this offseason. We’d love to see them bring the rest of the state into the fold, and training camp could be a great way to do that.
