Kansas City Chiefs sign Patrick Mahomes to rookie deal
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City have reached an agreement with their lone unsigned draft pick: quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The wait is over. The Kansas City Chiefs now reportedly have every member of the 2017 NFL draft class under contract. Patrick Mahomes, the No. 10 overall selection from the draft, is now officially a Kansas City Chief.
The timing of the signing is perfect as the Chiefs rookies, which also includes undrafted free agents, will report in a matter of days to St. Joseph for training camp. For Mahomes in particular, it’s a very important time for him to get his feet wet and learn as much as possible as the team’s developing franchise quarterback. Every rep in practice, every bit of film study and every potential snap in the preseason are going to be under the microscope by the media and fans alike—all of whom are excited to see exactly what Mahomes can do.
Mahomes deal should be around what Spotrac predicted to be a four-year, $16.4 million deal, a pre-set slotted amount already determined by the collective bargaining agreement that keeps all rookie contracts in a predictable place. The only hold-up, potentially, in negotiations would be the presence of any offset language or timing of bonus payments, in addition to contract language that could allow the Chiefs to potentially void the deal.
Mahomes threw 93 touchdown passes in his career at Texas Tech, including 41 last season. The Chiefs traded their 2018 first round pick and an extra third round choice to move up from No. 27 to No. 10 overall to take Mahomes.
