Dave Toub is the greatest special teams coach of all time and deserves a millionty dollars according to new special teams rankings.
Football Outsiders, in conjunction with ESPN, recently posted a list of the top 30 special teams units of the last 30 years. In depth stats can be hard to find for all of NFL history, but at least we have three decades worth of insight and analysis to peruse. In the process of reading through their rankings of special teams play, one thing is abundantly clear: Dave Toub is the greatest special teams coach of all time.
The Kansas City Chiefs should consider themselves very fortunate to have Toub on staff year after year, a luxury that most teams would seriously love to poach. Toub’s units made up 7 of the top 30 special teams over the last 30 NFL seasons. Some of those are with the Chiefs while others are from his days with the Chicago Bears. What’s most important is to recognize the true greatness that Toub brings to the role.
As for the actual Chiefs listings on the Football Outsiders Top 30, the Chiefs came in three times in the bottom third, including the first stop at No. 20 overall.
20. 1995 Chiefs
"This placement is driven by return man Tamarick Vanover, who led the league with two touchdowns and 25.5 yards per kick return. He scored on a punt return as well. Punter Louie Aguiar also had a strong season, ranking fourth with 43.8 gross yards per punt."
25. 2016 Chiefs
"Rookie Tyreek Hill exploded onto the scene with two scores on punt returns and another on a kickoff. The Chiefs also got a Pro Bowl-caliber season from punter Dustin Colquitt."
26. 2013 Chiefs
"The Chiefs are on this list for their prowess on returns — but not because of just one player. Dexter McCluster’s 11.8 yards per return and two touchdowns helped the Chiefs rank second behind Minnesota in punt return value. Meanwhile, they led the league in kick return value, thanks to a combination of Quintin Demps and Knile Davis, who each averaged more than 30 yards per return and scored a touchdown."
Toub’s units grabbed several spots from his days in Chicago, including his top two spots which came in at No. 2 and No. 6 overall. Given his history and how the Chiefs continue to thrive on special teams, K.C. fans should consider themselves lucky to have an assistant coach who is literally one of the NFL’s best minds of all time.
