Kansas City Chiefs earn “C-” offseason grade from Bleacher Report

Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport gives the Kansas City Chiefs a “C-” grade for their entire offseason activity.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been a very interesting team to follow this offseason. On one hand, there was plenty of early news with extensions and the release of Jamaal Charles before relative silence in the early stages of free agency. Then came the huge draft weekend filled with multiple trades up to move from 10 picks to 6 players and the surprising release of Jeremy Maclin weeks later.

Now that minicamps are finally over, Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport is taking a closer look at each team and giving his quick synopsis and grade on how he thinks the offseason went. For the Kansas City Chiefs, he has a “C-” grade, given that so many of the moves were about 2018 and beyond.

"Five years from now, we may look back on the Mahomes deal as a masterstroke. But in its totality, the Chiefs’ offseason didn’t feel like a 12-win team gearing up for another playoff run. It felt more like a team that believed last year’s success was a mirage, so it thus decided to get a head start on an imminent rebuild."

Despite the trading up for prospects who are a bit more raw in this year’s draft, don’t tell the players that this year is a lost cause. Most players have been clear that the Super Bowl is their focus for 2017, mentioning the goal without any hint of wishful thinking. Patrick Mahomes might have been the first round draft pick, but these Chiefs believe they’re capable of winning it all, even as the front office prepares for the future.
