The Smith era in K.C.

If we allow our eyes to look back up to those previous quarterbacks, and compare those seasons to the last four, what a drastic turn of events. What are the expectations today? Mmmhmm.

The Chiefs started 9-0 his first season. They won only two games the year before. Two. There was also an 11-game winning streak, as well as our first playoff win in over two decades. Betcha San Fran misses Alex.

The word contender has been floating around like pollen in the Midwest the last few years. Sure, Andy Reid has a lot to do with it, as does John Dorsey. However, neither actually play the game on Sundays, or Mondays, or Thursdays, or Saturdays for that matter. A bundle of names have a lot to do with the success in Kansas City these last four years. Let us not forget how important that position is under center.

Anyone who follows the Chiefs know the term “game manager”. Every commentator, critic, and fan have labeled him as such. On each Sunday morning pre-game show we are watching or listening to, Smith is being described this way. No quarterback wants this label.

Chiefs fans especially should welcome the term. Go ahead and scroll back up to the list of former quarterbacks. I dare you. We have not had a game manager in years.

Enter Patrick Mahomes II

With Alex Smith’s contract coming to an end, the Chiefs made the most surprising move of the first round. Leaving commentators temporarily speechless, the Chiefs moved up 17 spots to pick Patrick Mahomes II. This pick was for the future of this franchise, not the present.

Patrick Mahomes is a completely different type of quarterback than Alex Smith. For example, he can heave that ball eighty yards downfield. Oh, he is not a cautious quarterback either; he takes chances. Sometimes those chances evolve into mistakes, rather quickly.

Patrick Mahomes has exactly what Alex Smith does not, and lacks what Alex Smith possesses.
