It’s only a matter of time before Chiefs fans grow impatient to see Patrick Mahomes take the field.

Could Kansas City Chiefs fans influence the outcome of this season? Absolutely.

Professional sports can be cruel at times. Athletes are faced with a constant barrage of ridicule, judgement and suggestions from armchair quarterbacks on how to be better at what they do professionally.

These athletes are loved one week, hated on the next.

You can hit the mute button on your television and turn the knob down on the radio, but you can not avoid the noise of the fans. It just so happens, Chiefs fans are the loudest on Earth.

Alex Smith knows all to well how quickly an organization, and the fans of that organization, can forget what you have done for them. Drafted No. 1 overall by the San Francisco 49ers in 2005, the expectations were high for Smith to continue the time-honored tradition of stellar quarterbacks suiting up for the 49ers.

Due to multiple head coaching changes, coordinator changes in each of his first six seasons, and a plethora of scheme changes, Smith never seemed to grow comfortable in San Francisco. A strong 2011 campaign that took the 49ers to the NFC Championship game under Jim Harbaugh seemed to bring Smith back into the spotlight. He had an even stronger beginning to the 2012 season before a concussion caused him to be sidelined, he saw his starting job go to Colin Kaepernick, and never regained it.

The Smith era was over in San Francisco. In steps Kansas City. Upon the news that the Chiefs had signed him, my thoughts were similar to most fans. Another San Francisco has-been being brought to Kansas City. (No offense, Joe)

Chiefs before Alex Smith

Matt Cassel.

Brady Quinn.

Tyler Palko.

Kyle Orton.

Brodie Croyle.

Tyler Thigpen.

Damon Huard.

Do I really need to write anything here? From 2007 to 2012 these men were your quarterbacks. Remember what the expectations were for those seasons? Yeah, neither do I.
