The Kansas City Chiefs will have one position to watch very special interest throughout the preseason. The wide receiver group will be under the microscope.
Andy Reid met with the gathered media on Tuesday to discuss recent events including the release of Jeremy Maclin. While this is easily part of a head coaches job, Reid expressed just how difficult it can be saying,
"“We go about weighing a bunch of different things. It is a decision we end up making. This is the worst part about the job, clearly. It is not easy for John (Dorsey), it is not easy for me or the coaches. “"
Reid also was forthcoming about the fact that it had been under consideration and was not a last-minute decision, stating
"“Dorse (John Dorsey) does most of that… I know he’s had that rolling around for a while as he has gone through it.”"
On the field, the Chiefs field they have what they’re looking for at the moment read me comments alluding to the fact that Tyreek Hill will be the first to practice at Maclin former position as the Z receiver explaining,
"“You know how much we rotate people. But Tyreek would be in that position, yeah.”"
Reid will have to depend on his coaching staff to bring the young wide receiver room along. In particular, newly-hired receivers coach Greg Lewis will have to lead as a coach and develop the leadership amongst the experienced players. Reid put it frankly in saying that
"“Albert (Wilson) and Chris (Conley), they have spent a lot of time with Jeremy. And yeah, they will step that up. We have Greg (Lewis) here, too, that we have hired. Greg has been there, done that. He understands how that goes. I’ve got confidence in that group right there.”"
This position group will need to respond well to Reid’s confidence if this team and Alex Smith hope to return to the AFC playoffs.
