The Kansas City Chiefs signed free agent linebacker Tourek Williams, release Victor Ochi on Monday.

The Kansas City Chiefs made a slight switch on the roster on Monday when general manager John Dorsey decided to switch linebacker Victor Ochi, who was released, for newly signed free agent linebacker Tourek Williams, per the Star..

Williams was the San Diego Chargers sixth round choice in the 2013 NFL Draft after a strong career at Florida International where he had 45 career tackles for loss and 18 career sacks. Williams started six games for the Chargers his rookie season, but he largely played on special teams over the last few years in 47 games total.

Williams’ addition to the Chiefs gives Dave Toub another experienced special teamer and a potentially promising edge player if there’s enough there to warrant a look at outside linebacker. Ochi largely fit the same role as a player with some developmental pass rushing ability who was going to have to earn his keep on special teams. Ochi, a Stony Brook product, joined the Chiefs from the New York Jets practice squad back in January.

From the Chargers standpoint, they’re unlikely to miss Williams’ presence, but for the Chiefs, it’s a flyer on a 3-time All-Sun Belt player who might blossom given the right scheme and opportunity. Then again, it’s all likely a wash given that either player was facing an uphill climb to even make the final roster as it is.
