Derrick Johnson “still on track” for training camp return

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson says he’s still on track to be back by training camp from an Achilles tendon tear.
Derrick Johnson was originally slated to return from an Achilles tendon tear in time for training camp for the Kansas City Chiefs. In mid-May the star linebacker says he’s “still on track” for that same timeline as he continues in his recovery.
"“I’m still on track,” Johnson said. “The goal is to be ready by camp.”"
The Chiefs certainly seem to be relying on the four-time Pro Bowler to return to form, having failed to add any real security to the heart of the defense in case Johnson cannot make it back or return to form for some reason. The Chiefs drafted Ukeme Eligwe, an athletic linebacker from Georgia Southern in the fifth round, but he’s likely to be a practice squad player in the early going. The team has also hosted free agent linebackers without a making any real move, letting Gerald Hodges and Rey Mauluga leave without a deal while also not having replaced veteran Josh Mauga who left after spending last year on Injured Reserve.
The team retains Ramik Wilson as a potential replacement or insurance for DJ along with special teamer and linebacker D.J. Alexander.
Johnson is the team’s all-time leader in tackles with 1,080 along with 14 interceptions, 27.5 sacks and a future in the team’s Ring of Honor.
