The Chiefs reportedly offered the Titans an impressive package to move up to No. 5 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft to get Patrick Mahomes.

The Kansas City Chiefs were apparently dead-set on getting their man, that man being Patrick Mahomes II. The Texas Tech quarterback was interviewed and worked out during the pre-draft season, along with every other top quarterback available, and general manager John Dorsey apparently loved what he saw. The Chiefs ended up trading all the way to No. 10 from No. 27 overall to take Mahomes, but Peter King says the Chiefs actually had an offer to move up to No. 5 with the Tennessee Titans.

Writing from the draft war room of the San Francisco 49ers, King describes the scene in his latest Monday Morning Quarterback column:

"At one point discussion turned to the rest of the first round. Peters heard reliably that Kansas City, picking 27th, was moving way up to Tennessee at five. Presumably for a quarterback. “I hear it’s for a one, two, four and next year’s one,” Shanahan said. “They offered that to Tennessee.”"

The Chiefs ended up giving the Buffalo Bills those two first round picks, both in 2017 and 2018, along with a single third round pick, splitting the difference of the rumored deal to move up to No. 5. Clearly the cost between No. 5 and 10 was another mid-round pick, but what’s also clear is that the Titans apparently didn’t want to move down all the way to No. 27 in the first round. They stuck with the pick and got Corey Davis, wide receiver.

Fortunately the Chiefs found another outlet to grab Mahomes before other interested teams, including the Saints, Giants or Cardinals, could get involved.
