Chiefs draft 2017: Analyzing the 4 trades made by John Dorsey
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs pulled off four trades on NFL Draft weekend. Here’s a rundown of each and how each side looks after the dust has settled.
John Dorsey did his part. The Kansas City Chiefs general manager pulled off four trades over NFL Draft weekend, one that included an NFL record 38 trades over the three-day event. Dorsey himself was a part of four of those trades, an active wheeler-dealer that showed a newfound level of risk-taking and confidence compared to previous drafts in the Dorsey tenure.
In the past, Dorsey has typically made smaller moves in the draft and the only first round move was to get out of the round entirely in order to earn some more draft assets. In this draft, even one as loaded as this one, Dorsey seemed anxious to get rid of his 10 choices, dealing multiple selections in multiple deals in order to land the player he wanted most.
It’s a sign the Chiefs are as stacked as they’ve been in years as a team, already very deep at several positions even before the draft got started. That means the Chiefs could afford to take more risks than normal and/or zero in on “their guys” because there’s simply not a lot of room for extra competition for the sake of it. The Chiefs largely know who they are, what they’re capable of and they’re ready to defend the division title. This draft class is more of a bonus than anything, and Dorsey’s trade activity backs up that idea.
Here’s a closer look at each of John Dorsey’s official trades from the 2017 NFL Draft.
