The Kansas City Chiefs made one of the biggest splashes of the first round and got their quarterback. There is work ahead for Mahomes and Andy Reid but there is more work to be done in this draft.

The Chiefs are resetting their board Thursday because, despite the trade, they still have two selections on day 2, the #59 overall and the #104 overall.

Re-focusing the board for day 2 is critical in forming a plan to make an impact Friday. Mahomes is not enough and Thursday is gone. Friday needs to be about finding a starter-quality player a position of outstanding need.

Day 2 Options

I expect John Dorsey and Andy Reid to look heavily at the defensive draft class on Friday. The Chiefs could potentially choose a player at any level of the defense.

Dorsey is on record saying that he believes the defensive back class is deep. The inside linebacker group cannot offer the same volume of quality players. The thin group of scheme fits for the Chiefs hybrid 3-4 base/nickel sub package narrows the field of available defensive lineman as well. An edge rusher could be the wild card but is very dependent on how the board falls after other teams reset their board Friday morning.

Potential defensive options on Friday for the Chiefs include:
Kevin King, Quincy Wilson, Budda Baker, Zach Cunningham, Derek Rivers, Sidney Jones*, Akhello Witherspoon, Elijah Qualls, Raekwon McMillan, Chris Wormley and Obi Melifonwu.

There is also an outside chance at a high-quality offensive lineman. The top overall lineman in this draft, Forrest Lamp, is still on the board. Much like Joel Bitonio a few years ago, Lamp could go in the second round. Dorsey may need to make another move if he wants a chance at Forrest Lamp.

The running back class offers some interesting options for the Chiefs. Dalvin Cook will be the prime target, but likely won’t be attainable for Kansas City. There are several options for both pass-catching 3rd-down backs and downhill runners on Friday. The Chiefs could choose to add one before the day is over.

Potential defensive options on Friday for the Chiefs include:
Cook, Forrest Lamp, Curtis Samuel, Alvin Kamara, Marlon Mack, Zay Jones, Chad Hansen, and D’onta Foreman.
