Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Chiefs are making some noise about moving up into the top 10 of the 2017 NFL Draft.
The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly making waves leading up to the final hours of the 2017 NFL Draft with talk that they are wanting to make a move up into the top ten. The rumor would likely put the Chiefs in a position to move several picks in exchange for the chance to grab a top-rated quarterback from this class.
The Chiefs have done the requisite homework, having brought in every quarterback considered to be a pick in the first day or two, from Deshaun Watson and DeShone Kizer to Mitchell Trubisky and Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs, if they found their guy, would likely make the move believing they could keep him as an understudy for the next year under Alex Smith and then move on from Smith in 2018 when the financial savings from cutting him would be notable.
The Chiefs have 10 picks available to them in this draft and would likely have to trade a first, second and third round pick plus more to move up from No. 27 overall into the top 10, especially if they are aiming as high as No. 5 with the Tennessee Titans.
The last time the Chiefs drafted a quarterback in the first round was 1983 when they selected Todd Blackledge.
