Jamaal Charles appears to be turning a corner in his rehab. Will the Chiefs potentially re-sign him?

The Kansas City Chiefs made a difficult decision earlier this offseason when they released franchise icon and all-time leading rusher Jamaal Charles. It made sense on paper given the money owed to Charles and the fact that the University of Texas product had a difficult time staying healthy the last two years. However, it’s clear from a video posted by his agent, David Mulugheta, that Charles is doing everything he can to return to form.

Charles played in only 8 games the last two seasons combined, but if he’s healthy, he can be the sort of dynamic back that set the NFL record for career average for yards/carry. Would the Chiefs reconsider a move and bring him back into the fold? They replaced him with another veteran in C.J. Spiller already and the team is likely going to draft someone given how deep the draft class is. Then again, it might be interesting to see if the Chiefs leave the position alone and somehow come away with no new players.

Spencer Ware stands to inherit the starting role again at this point, but in mock drafts the Chiefs have been connected to Joe Mixon, Dalvin Cook, Christian McCaffrey, Alvin Kamara, Marlon Mack, Aaron Jones, Brian Hill and others. The need, in short, is obvious to everyone, so whether they add someone early or late, they’re expected to invest at least one draft pick at running back.

Still the Chiefs know better than anyone what Jamaal Charles is capable of. If they like what they see, he still remains what they need.
