I’ve already said that I would be 100% comfortable with the Chiefs trading into the top ten in order to grab the quarterback prospect that they like the most. If they were to do that, I believe there would be multiple teams that would be willing trade partners. After all, most teams drafting in the top ten are there because they have lots of holes in their roster. Therefore, the idea of getting lots of picks in return for one high pick will be appealing to them. What could that mean for the Chiefs in terms of draft picks? Here’s an example using the NFL’s trade chart.

Let’s get crazy for a minute and say that the Chiefs wanted to go all the way up to the sixth pick in the draft. That pick is owned by the New York Jets (a team with a ton of roster spots to upgrade). The NFL trade chart says that the Chiefs would have to give up their first and second round picks this year and their first round pick next year. I actually believe it would probably take more than that. I would personally rather give up picks this year than next year. So I would offer something like their first, second, one of their third round picks and one of their fifth round picks from this draft as well as their first round pick next year. That would still leave KC with a third, fourth, fifth, two sixths and a seventh round pick this season. That’s six picks plus their quarterback of the future in this draft.

That gives you an idea of what it might cost for the Chiefs to jump up really high to get their quarterback. Again, I’m 100% on board with that if the Chiefs believe one of the quarterbacks is worth that. However, that is not the perfect trade partner for the Chiefs. That team is the Indianapolis Colts.

The Colts recently hired Kansas City’s Director of Football Operations Chris Ballard as their General Manager. So obviously he and John Dorsey have a great relationship. The Colts are in the opposite situation as the Chiefs. They have their franchise quarterback but the rest of their roster needs significant upgrades. That makes them an ideal trade partner.

If the Chiefs believe the quarterback they are targeting will make it past the Arizona Cardinals at pick No. 13, then they could move up to pick No. 15 by trading with the Colts and ensure no other team jumps up and gets their man. The cost for moving up from pick No. 27 to pick No. 15 isn’t near as steep. According to the trade chart it should only cost the Chiefs their first, second, and one of their third rounders. That would mean the Chiefs would get their quarterback of the future and still have seven draft picks remaining in this draft with no future draft picks used.

That’s my perfect scenario for this draft. Make that trade with the Colts and land their quarterback (my choice would be Mahomes, but as long as the Chiefs are happy so am I). Then with the remaining seven picks land some combination of running back, tight end, defensive line, pass rusher, inside linebacker, and cornerback. If that happens this week I will be on cloud nine. Who am I kidding? If the Chiefs trade up for a first round quarterback I will be on cloud nine regardless of what other positions they draft after that.

So what do you think Chiefs fans? Do you agree that getting their quarterback of the future is the clear number one objective of this draft? Are you in agreement that they should be willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen assuming there is a quarterback that they think is worth it? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

As always, thanks for reading and GO CHIEFS!
