All week we’ve been looking at trade ideas involving the NFL draft.  This time we will look at trading one of our own to build for the future.

It’s time the Kansas City Chiefs get serious about the future of their quarterback position. There may be one or two guys in this year’s draft that could be the answer they’ve been looking for since 1983. If a quarterback isn’t there when they are on the clock, then I believe the Chiefs will be open to trade options/scenarios. In this scenario, I have the Chiefs repeating their 2016 draft and making a trade with the San Francisco 49ers.

Kansas City Chiefs receive: 2017 4th round (109th overall), 2018 1st Round Pick

San Francisco 49ers: Justin Houston, 2017 1st round pick (27th overall), 2017 3rd round pick (91st overall)

Yes you did read that correctly, my scenario has the Chiefs trading Justin Houston. Now before you petition to have me fired or hauled off to mid-field hear me out.

The Chiefs need to get a franchise quarterback in one of the next two drafts. That is not an opinion that is a fact. At pick 27 in the first round this year, it is unlikely that they will get that quarterback this year. Which means that next year would be a must draft year for the Chiefs at the quarterback position. This means they need to either need to be picking high in the draft or have the ammo to get high in the draft. The team will be good this year so it’s unlikely they’ll be picking any higher than the low 20’s next year. So they would need a lot of ammo to move into prime quarterback range of the top five. This trade gives them that.

The 49ers are going to be bad next year. So taking their first round pick would get you into the top 10 of the draft. At that point you will either be high enough in the draft to get a quarterback you want or would have two first round picks, including a top 10 that would make a trade up possible. This trade almost guarantees the Chiefs being able to draft a top two quarterback in the 2018 NFL draft which is something the team has needed for over 30 years. We’ve been begging for the Chiefs to find the next Len Dawson. Would anyone care that we lost Houston if the next Andrew Luck, Matt Ryan or Cam Newton was wearing red and gold?
