Why a trade for Carlos Hyde wouldn’t work

There’s one primary reason why this wouldn’t work for the Chiefs—the injury history. For a team that’s already been hoping and praying that their primary running back could stay healthy year after year (after year after year), the idea of trading for another oft-injured product could be a turnoff. Hyde’s price is low, yes, but it’s for good reason, and trading one known lemon for another team’s perceived lemon might be difficult to term as an “upgrade.”

Even if Dorsey could get past the ghost of Jamaal Charles haunting the hallways at Arrowhead enough to try out another injured product, it actually might not be what the Chiefs need. Andy Reid’s offenses thrive with a back who can reliably catch the ball out of the backfield—not exactly Hyde’s forte. A tandem of Hyde and Ware would be a run-tough offense all of a sudden, and it could make for strange bedfellows with the rest of the offensive pieces in place.

Even more, this is an incredibly strong draft class at running back, a batch of players that could include several Pro Bowl rushers. The Chiefs have a chance to grab a truly special talent at the very beginning of his career in this draft, someone who could one day be mentioned alongside the Jamaals, the Larrys, the Priests and the Christians of the franchise’s history. Will Dorsey give that up and feel okay going with a veteran with a poor injury history and snub this chance to grab from a loaded gift bag?

What do you think Chiefs fans? Would you approve the trade? Reject it? Let us know.
