Whether or not it’s really true, the Denver Broncos are facing some drama around quarterback Paxton Lynch to start the week.
Last year around this time, the Denver Broncos pulled the trigger on a trade to move up before the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs to get Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch in the bottom of the first round. Both the Cowboys and Chiefs were reportedly also rumored to be interested, and John Elway was praised at the time for his ability to jump ahead and get the guy he wanted despite other teams waiting in the wings.
Fast forward one year and Paxton Lynch is in the spotlight again due to one former NFL scout turned Cowboys official writer, Bryan Broaddus, saying there are issues with Lynch internally with the Broncos—namely that he’s not a team player. This is what Broaddus specifically said in an article here.
"I talked to some guys in Denver; they’re having a problem with Paxton Lynch right now because they can’t get him to buy into the things like Dak Prescott bought in, where early in late out, that kind of thing."
Immediately there are a few key observances here. First of all, this is a transcript of Broaddus’s talk on a radio station in Dallas discussing the Cowboys—a man paid by the Cowboys to represent them. There’s an obvious issue of source problems here on multiple levels, as in no way Broaddus is going to make the Cowboys look like they did anything but the right move by taking Dak Prescott in the third. He’s throwing shade on Lynch for no reason in the process.

On the flip side of all of this is the smoke that has been coming out of Denver for some time. It’s the fact that Lynch looked horrible in his limited duty last year. It’s the fact that Trevor Siemian remains confident he can be the starter, and that John Elway flip-flopped himself this offseason saying that anything was possible at quarterback (likely in terms of potentially adding Tony Romo) before then saying the Broncos were set at the position.
While Broaddus is the absolute wrong guy to making insider claims about Lynch, the likelihood remains that he’s hit somewhere on the general target even if he’s qualified to play in the first place. Lynch hasn’t looked the part. Elway hasn’t sounded confident. The Cowboys most certainly were considering all kinds of outside possibilities at the position.
It’s easy to tear down the source here, and for good reason, but it doesn’t mean he’s entirely wrong. Whether it’s a problem buying in to the program, a general lack of leadership or an inability to make the leap as expected so far, Elway himself has exhibited concerns about Paxton Lynch. There’s no need to kick Broaddus too hard when he’s not too far off in the first place.
