CINCINNATI, OH - OCTOBER 23, 2016: Quarterback Kevin Hogan

Before the Chiefs draft an entire new draft class to analyze, let’s take a look back at 2016. Our next Rookie Review is Kevin Hogan.

As part of the Ron Wolf family tree, John Dorsey is well-versed in taking frequent risks on quarterbacks in later rounds in the hope they’ll eventually turn into something. Aaron Murray one year turns into Kevin Hogan in another. In the fifth round, the Chiefs kept their own pick and selected the Stanford quarterback.

Hogan had a tough order from the outset in college when he was asked to replace Andrew Luck, but he held his own and had a nice record with 36 wins and 10 losses as a long-time starter in the Pac-12. Coming from a pro-style system likely helped Hogan get the Chiefs attention, and his overall game was somewhat reminiscent of Alex Smith.

Measurements

6-3, 218 lbs.

Key college stats

36-10 as a starter at Stanford. 27 touchdowns, 8 interceptions his senior season.

What they said at the time

"“The Chiefs lost one of the best back up QBs in the NFL to free agency, so that spot is open for business. Similar to Chase Daniel coming out, Hogan led a big program to a ton of wins and he can lead a locker room from day 1. Hogan is limited as a passer, but he’s comfortable managing and making plays in a pro style system.” -Mark Dulgerian"

One year later

Kevin Hogan is a Cleveland Brown. Immediately following the draft, Hogan went to OTAs and training camp as one of three youngsters vying for two slots behind Alex Smith. John Dorsey didn’t like what he saw, apparently, and decided to reverse course on everyone. Aaron Murray was sent packing, as was Hogan, and the last man standing, Tyler Bray, was relegated to No. 3 on the depth chart. Nick Foles was signed as a veteran addition and that was that.

Summary

A short-lived quarterback prospect who will be a useful Chiefs trivia answer for years to come.
