NFL draft analyst Mike Mayock has released his latest prospect rankings, and Deshaun Watson has taken over the top spot.
Deshaun Watson has taken over at No. 1. The coveted slot atop the latest 2017 NFL Draft rankings by Mike Mayock now belongs to the Clemson Tigers starter, now that Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer has fallen precipitously from No. 1 to No. 4.
Mayock’s third set of rankings for the draft features Kizer at No. 4, behind Watson up top, North Carolina’s Mitchell Trubisky at No. 2 and Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes at No. 3. Watson’s intangibles are celebrated by everyone, as are his clutch performances in the biggest games in college football. However, he’s faced significant questions about the velocity of his throws, footwork and his ability to move through his progressions.
The fact that there are so many aspects of Watson’s game that could be called suspect is a sign that there aren’t any sure things in this draft. Each quarterback, Watson included, come with extensive strengths and weaknesses, which likely means that Mayock’s rankings mirror the NFL’s — that a quarterback atop a draft board one month ago could fall three spots.
The Chiefs pick at No. 27 which could bode well for their ability to grab a quarterback, if they so choose. With the holes in each quarterback’s game, the likelihood of each of them falling increases.
