Chase Daniel returned to New Orleans this offseason on a one-year deal, leaving other offers on the table in the process.
Chase Daniel is in familiar territory these days. As the New Orleans Saints second quarterback on the depth chart, sitting behind the firmly entrenched Drew Brees, Daniel knows this space well since he occupied this same role from 2010-2012. For three years, he was Brees’ understudy in case the future Hall of Famer ever fell subject to injury or declining ability.
What’s amazing about Brees is that four years later and approaching his fourties, Brees is still the starter and shows no signs at all of slowing down. Yet Brees is also entering his final season of his current deal, and it’s impossible to tell at this point what will happen for Brees. Will he retire? Re-sign? Join another team in the hopes of adding another Super Bowl ring? Anything is possible given his age but also his ability to play at a high level.

For Daniel the move back to New Orleans was a chance to put himself in a familiar offense under head coach Sean Payton and be poised in case Brees actually leaves or retires. Rather than come into an unknown situation and hope for a starting role, Daniel can hope for a chance while remaining noncommittal given a one year deal. In fact, Daniel says he left other offers, including a chance to start, on the table in order to return to the Big Easy.
"“There were plenty of other offers on the table, not only to be a backup but possibly come in and compete and be a starter,” Daniel said, declining to list the other teams. “But I felt right now at this point in my career for my family, for this one-year deal, this was the best spot.”"
Daniel left New Orleans to spend the next three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs as the primary back-up for Alex Smith. Last season he served as the Philadelphia Eagles No. 2 behind Carson Wentz. The Eagles released Daniel earlier this offseason after signing Nick Foles to be veteran back-up.
Despite being a seven-year veteran, Daniel only has two NFL starts to his name, going 1-1 in those two games.
