New York Jets decide on Josh McCown, not Chase Daniel
By Matt Conner
The New York Jets decided on Josh McCown on the same day that Chase Daniel visited the team.
The New York Jets have their man. After visiting with multiple free agent veteran quarterbacks, the Jets have agreed to a one-year deal with Josh McCown, formerly of the Cleveland Browns.
The Jets had visited with Chase Daniel during the day on Monday, but apparently were checking out one last option before deciding to officially pull the trigger on signing McCown. The rumors were strongly in McCown’s favor after a previous visit and Daniel’s visit was a bit of a surprise. Jay Cutler was also mentioned in rumors but nothing ever materialized there.
For Daniel, this means he will continue his search for a potential starting spot elsewhere in the NFL, but the landscape is looking a bit barren at this point. The Jets were one of a few places where there was not a clear-cut starting option. Maybe the Cleveland Browns are the only team left but they have the riches to afford A.J. McCarron or Jimmy Garoppolo if they want. Daniel has visited with the New Orleans Saints, his first long-term home in the NFL, but he would have to sit behind Drew Brees. They also already employ Luke McCown, Josh’s brother, as this primary back-up.
McCown went 0-3 as a starter last season for the Browns before an injury cancelled his season. He threw 6 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. He has a career record of 18-42.
