Can the Kansas City Chiefs afford to draft Joe Mixon?
By Nick Floyd
Is Mixon worth the hassle?
Honestly, this is a very hard question. On one hand you have the talent of one of the better backs in this year’s selection. On the other hand, however, is the fact that the Chiefs would be once again risking a public relations backlash with drafting Mixon. Can the team handle the pressure of more negative press coming their way with this selection? It’s a tough question, but let’s take a look.
Their head coach Andy Reid, is one of the best coaches in the NFL and he knows how to help players. Mix in the due diligence of general manager John Dorsey and his team and you have a solid plan for vetting players. Mixon may have character issues, but so did Tyreek Hill. While it is not certain that lighting will strike twice, it might be worth it given the type of player Mixon can become. Take a look at what Reid was able to do with a player like Michael Vick who went to jail for dog fighting, and came back and saw a career resurgence under Reid’s guidance.
While there it is not a given that this will happen with Mixon, if he does fall to the Chiefs as predicted, it might be worth the risk. The upside is that Mixon works out for the team like Hill did and if not the team can part ways with the former Sooner. Can the team afford to take another chance? Simply put, yes they can. Will they? It remains to be seen. They have learned from drafting Hill last year what to expect from a pick like this, and the media and fan backlash is something they will be prepared for, should they choose to draft him. The upside could very well outweigh the bad with this pick, and they might do it.
The Chiefs are in an interesting position with their draft this year. There are plenty of good players on their current roster and besides for a few key positions they are drafting for depth not need. Mixon is an intriguing option for them to add another talented running back to their group, whether the team chooses to do so or not, we will find out in a few short weeks.
What do you think, Addicts? Is it worth it to take Mixon if he should fall to them, or should they stay far away from him? Let us know in the comments below.
