Seahawks choose Eddie Lacy over Jamaal Charles, Adrian Peterson
By Matt Conner
With Jamaal Charles slated for a visit on Wednesday and Thursday and Adrian Peterson having already visited, the Seahawks signed Eddie Lacy to a contract on Tuesday.
The Seattle Seahawks have made their move at running back, signing former Green Bay Packers veteran Eddie Lacy to a one-year deal.
Interestingly enough, Jamaal Charles was slated for a visit on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, and it’s still unknown if they will keep that same schedule or whether they will cancel Charles’ trip.
It’s hard to imagine how or even why the Seahawks would express interest in Charles if they’ve already signed Lacy. The team already has younger backs like Thomas Rawls, C.J. Prosise and Alex Collins in tow, so there’s not much room on the team as it is for a veteran back. Signing Lacy to $3 million guaranteed means he’s going to be the primary addition there, so unless Charles is going to take a non-guaranteed flyer, then it seems the Seahawks are likely a dead end for the former Chiefs running back.
The same can be said for Adrian Peterson, the former Vikings great who is undoubtedly a Hall of Fame talent. Peterson led the NFL in rushing yards as recently as 2015, so it’s a bit surprising that Lacy won above the rest of the running backs. Then again, Lacy is relatively young compared to the others at 26-years-old, and he put up solid numbers before a season-ending injury last year. He was averaging a very healthy 5.1 yards per carry in 2016, a career-high for Lacy.
