Daniel Sorensen made his contract extension official with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday.
The Kansas City Chiefs made it official on Monday with the announcement of Daniel Sorensen’s brand new contract extension. The contract keeps the safety locked up for another four years with the Chiefs, rewarding him for the play of his first three full seasons in Kansas City.
"“Daniel has been a very efficient player for us, both on defense and special teams,” Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey said in a press release. “He’s a relentless worker and a team-first guy. He’s grown each year in our system and I look forward to watching him develop even more as we move forward.”"
Sorensen was the second safety locked up by John Dorsey this offseason, coming a few days after the team made Eric Berry the highest-paid safety in the game. Berry signed a 6-year, $78 million deal that will likely keep him with the Chiefs for the rest of his playing career. Showing just how much they valued Sorensen, however, the Chiefs still stretched their finances to fit in a new extension for the BYU product as well since they didn’t want to lose him to the open market.
Despite playing behind Ron Parker and Berry on the depth chart, the reality is that Sorensen was on the field for nearly 50 percent of the Chiefs defensive snaps last season—not including playing the bulk of special teams snaps as well. Sorensen has looked better each year, and enjoyed career-highs in multiple stats in 2016, including interceptions (3), passes defended (6), forced fumbles (2) and tackles (54 total).
Sorensen signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2014.
