The Kansas City Chiefs are keeping one of their own free agents in offensive lineman Mike Person.

The offensive front was stabilized earlier this offseason with the signing of Laurent Duvernay-Tardif to a long-term extension. The move will keep the perceived starting five together for at least three more seasons across the entire front, from Eric Fisher to Mitchell Schwartz. However, it’s clear that general manager John Dorsey wants to keep the Chiefs back-ups in place as well.

Mike Person originally signed with the Chiefs last November, the same week the Chiefs placed Parker Ehinger on injured reserve. Person was a small-school prospect when he was selected in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Like a lot of developmental prospects, Person bounced from roster to roster, including the Indianapolis Colts, Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks, but clearly Dorsey likes what he sees from Person.

Person entered the NFL with experience at tackle but he’s played interior line as a center as well. Person’s NFL draft profile praises his size and athleticism while adding that he needs to add significant bulk and adjust to the pro level. Perhaps he’s had enough time to turn the corner and offer the Chiefs some competition as a versatile lineman.
