Hosting free agents

Gerald Hodges is the first man up for a free agent visit to the Chiefs. The inside linebacker was a nice surprise for the San Francisco 49ers last season as a nice run stopping linebacker who also could disrupt passing lanes alongside NaVorro Bowman. The fact he’s going to visit Kansas City shows that Dorsey isn’t satisfied just waiting on draft picks to fill whatever holes or make whatever upgrades are around. Instead, he’s still scouring the waiver wire and free agent list, even with limited cash, to see who might be able to help.

Hodges could certainly help in the middle given that the Chiefs could use some help with their run defense. Derrick Johnson is entrenched as the starter, but the vet is returning from Achilles surgery. The Chiefs also lost veteran linebacker Josh Mauga and Ramik Wilson’s slot could be upgraded. Some linebacking help would certainly be appreciated right now.

The Chiefs will face these same questions about a potential tight end addition, nose tackle, running back, defensive end, cornerback and maybe even swing tackle. The Chiefs shouldn’t be expected to sign myriad guys or even to make a single large splash in free agency, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see a couple signings that help round out the list of needs heading into the NFL Draft.
