Tony Romo rumors: A closer look at every team in play
By Matt Conner
Denver Broncos
John Elway has already admitted that the Denver Broncos are looking at “all the options” this offseason when it comes to quarterback. Unlike the Chiefs who have backed their incumbent starter again and again, the Broncos have put the pressure on Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch to step up or likely find themselves benched as the team gathers soon for OTAs. Elway apparently hasn’t liked what he saw from Siemian last season and it also shows that Lynch, last year’s first round pick, is not yet ready.
Enter Romo, the perfect bridge between the present and the future for Elway. It’s farther from home than Houston for Romo, but that hasn’t stopped the veteran from keeping Denver on his list of preferred places to play. He would also very much enjoy throwing to a tandem like Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas. Plus the defense is still very stout enough to step up for another strong playoff run.
The x-factor here, however, is John Elway’s presence himself. His ability to get Peyton Manning’s attention and ultimate commitment showed that when he wants his man, he usually gets him. John Dorsey has been impressive in this regard, but watch Elway’s ability to steal Sanders or even keep Manning from taking the Chiefs calls and it’s clear he has the upper hand. There’s a sense that if Elway has zeroed in on Romo, then he’s going to get Romo, and that sort of charisma likely trumps proximity to home or any other elements that another team could offer.
