For those wanting the Tony Romo rumors to die down and the hard news to settle in Dallas, you might have to wait a bit since Jerry Jones isn’t in a hurry.

Jerry Jones updated the press on Saturday about Tony Romo’s status with the team, and the end result with a slightly less vague take on the scenario than everyone had before he spoke. The bottom line: the Dallas Cowboys owner is just fine taking his time to make the right decision, one way or the other.

That means that Romo could potentially stay with the Cowboys for the year or he could be shipped out in a trade. What feels just a bit less likely, although certainly still a possibility, is Romo being released. Jones said directly that Romo’s agents aren’t being allowed to talk to other teams about any agreement.

"“We need to read some tea leaves. We don’t need to be overtly doing something. We don’t need to do that for cap room, we don’t need to do that for any reason. We just need to see some direction, and the way we’ll get it is by coming together and mutually working that direction out. So I mean I’m not trying to be vague. All I’m trying to do is say that we don’t have anything to move on at this point.”"

Romo has already been the subject of one three-way trade rumor that included Kirk Cousins and draft picks changing hands between the Cowboys, Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers. He’s also been linked to several teams if released, and Romo himself says his four favorite teams that he would want to play for would be the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals.

The Chiefs brass has attempted to instill confidence in Alex Smith as the starter for 2017 at every turn, including statements from the owner, the general manager and the head coach. At this point, making a move for Romo would undermine their offseason message entirely and would somewhat shake the trust of other players and agents attempting to deal with the team. After all, how good is John Dorsey’s word if he acquired Romo after saying Smith is his man?

Until Romo lands somewhere officially, however, expect the Chiefs to be included in the conversation, not only because Romo has put them there and Vegas has favored them, but the Chiefs need to do something at the position. Most fans are looking for a new starter to at least be waiting in the wings, if not under center in Week 1. Romo would at least provide that much, a fresh face at the position for fans demanding something new.

Romo has been injured the last two seasons and hasn’t completed a full season since 2014. In that year with the Cowboys, he threw 34 touchdowns and 9 interceptions while completing a league-high 70 percent of his passes.
